Discover why this untouched Pacific coast gem offers everything you didn't know you were looking for in a surf destination
When people ask me about surfing in Panama, they usually mention the same places: Playa Venao with its party, waves and beach bars, Santa Catalina with its surf school and crowded lineups, or Bocas del Toro with its backpacker hostels and Instagram spots. But here's what I tell them – if you're looking for crowds, perfectly curated beach clubs, and the typical surf town scene, then yes, those spots will deliver. But if you're searching for something deeper, something that feels like surfing used to be before it became an industry, then you need to know about Guanico.

The Beauty of Being Unknown
Guanico sits quietly on Panama's Azuero Peninsula, about an hour's drive from the more famous surf breaks. This distance isn't just measured in kilometers, it's measured in decades. While other beaches have evolved into surf destinations complete with surf schools, crowded hostels, and lineups packed with 50+ surfers fighting for waves, Guanico remains beautifully unchanged.
The first time I paddled out here, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Full of perfect pics peeling down a sandy coastline, with maybe two other surfers in the water. The wave quality rivals anywhere in Central America, but without the competition for every set wave that you'll find at more popular spots.
What Makes Guanico Special
Consistent, Quality Waves The geography here creates something magical. Our main break works on almost any swell direction, wrapping around the point to create long, workable waves that are perfect for every level. Whether you're just starting out or you've been surfing for decades, you'll find waves that challenge and inspire you.
Space to Breathe At Playa Venao or Santa Catalina during peak season, you might find yourself competing with 50+ other surfers for every wave, dodging surf schools and trying to navigate crowded lineups where localism can be an issue. At Bocas del Toro, the focus often shifts to the party scene rather than the pure surfing experience. Here in Guanico, a busy day means sharing the lineup with five other people. Most mornings, you'll have the waves entirely to yourself.
Authentic Local Culture This isn't a place that was built for tourism – it's a real fishing village where surfing happens to be incredible. The local fishermen have become some of my closest friends, sharing stories over morning coffee and teaching me about reading the ocean in ways no surf forecast ever could.
Beyond the Waves
What strikes visitors most isn't just the surfing – it's the complete experience. Guanico offers something that's become rare in our hyper-connected world: genuine tranquility.
Unspoiled Nature The coastline here remains largely undeveloped. You can walk for miles along black sand beaches backed by lush hills, spotting scarlet macaws and howler monkeys. The sunsets paint the sky in colors that seem too vivid to be real, reflecting off water so clear you can see fish swimming beneath your board.
Slow Living at Its Finest There's no pressure here to fill every moment with activity. Time moves differently in Guanico. Mornings start with the sound of waves and birdsong instead of traffic. Days unfold naturally around tides and weather rather than rigid schedules.
The La Chantin Difference
We chose Guanico specifically because it embodies everything we believe surf travel should be. When guests arrive at La Chantin, they're not just getting accommodation near good waves, they're stepping into a different way of being.
Planning Your Guanico Adventure
When to Visit The beauty of Guanico is that it works year-round. Dry season (December-April) offers the most consistent waves and sunny skies, perfect for those Instagram shots. But I personally love the green season (May-November) when the landscape comes alive, the crowds disappear entirely, and the waves can be even better.
What to Expect This isn't a resort destination. There's no room service or poolside bars. What you'll find instead is something more valuable: genuine connection with nature, local culture, and fellow travelers who chose the road less traveled.
The closest town is about 20 minutes away for supplies, but most everything you need – including some of the best ceviche in Panama – can be found right here in the village.
Why It Matters
In a world where every surf spot seems to be getting more crowded and commercialized, places like Guanico represent something precious. They remind us why we fell in love with surfing in the first place – not for the scene or the status, but for the pure joy of riding waves in beautiful, wild places.
When you choose Guanico over the more famous spots, you're not just choosing better waves and fewer crowds. You're choosing to support a community that hasn't lost its soul to tourism. You're choosing to experience Panama as it really is, not as it's been packaged for visitors.
And trust me, once you've experienced the magic of paddling out into an empty lineup as the sun rises over the mountains of the Azuero Peninsula, everywhere else will feel crowded.
Ready to discover Panama's best-kept surf secret? La Chantin offers the perfect base for exploring everything Guanico has to offer, from our traditional tipis overlooking the break to our deep connections with the local community.
