Surfing is one of those sports that completely transforms your lifestyle. Whether you're just starting or you've been chasing waves for years, having the right gear can make all the difference. After years of traveling and surfing through South America before settling in Playa Guanico, Panama, I've learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t.
So, here’s my ultimate guide to surf gear—what you need as a beginner, what to upgrade to as you improve, and the must-have accessories that make life easier in the water.

Choosing the Right Surfboard: Beginner vs. Advanced Surfers
Beginner Tip: Rent Before You Buy!
If you’re just starting, resist the temptation to buy a board right away. Renting allows you to test different shapes and sizes to understand what works best for you and your local surf spot.
A bigger board, like an 8-foot foamie, will make learning so much easier—trust me. You’ll catch more waves, have more stability, and progress faster. If you're planning to travel and don't have a car, a big board can be a hassle. Once you’re past the beginner stage, you can downsize to something more suited to your ability and lifestyle.
When to Buy: Once you feel confident standing up, turning, and paddling efficiently, then it’s time to invest in your own board. If you want to keep the easy paddle and float, a 7-foot foamie is a solid step down from the classic 8-footer.
Recommended Beginner Board: Wavestorm Classic . 7" Soft Top – Great for easy paddling and stability while learning.
Intermediate & Advanced: Finding Your Perfect Fit
If you're looking for an upgrade, a Torq Epoxy board (between 6’ and 7’) is a great choice. These boards float well but are more maneuverable, making them perfect for improving your technique while still enjoying an easy paddle.
Recommended Advanced Board: Torq Epoxy TET 6'8 Fish Surfboard – A fantastic balance of performance and stability.

Must-Have Surf Accessories || Best Surf Gear
1. Leash – Safety First
A leash is non-negotiable. It keeps your board attached to you, preventing it from becoming a hazard to others or forcing you to swim back to shore after every wipeout.
Recommended: Dakine Kaimana 7' Leash – Strong, durable, and comfortable.
2. Fins – The Right Ones Matter
Your fins dictate how your board moves in the water. Beginners can stick with the standard soft-top fins, while more advanced surfers should experiment with different setups.
Recommended: FCS II Performer Neo Glass Fins – Versatile and great for all conditions.
3. Wax – For Grip & Control
A good wax job keeps you from slipping off your board. Use tropical wax if you’re surfing in warm water like Panama.
Recommended: Sex Wax or Sticky Bumps Wax are great !
4. Surf Hat – Protect Yourself from the Sun
If you surf often in tropical places, a good surf hat can be a game-changer for sun protection.
Recommended: Dakine Surf Hat – Secure fit and lightweight.
5. Poncho Towel – Easy Beach Changes
Changing out of your wetsuit or surf gear in a parking lot or on the beach is much easier with a poncho towel.
Recommended: Ho Stevie! Changing Poncho – Soft, absorbent, and perfect for surfers.
6. Reef-Safe Sunscreen – Protect Your Skin & the Ocean
Regular sunscreen contains chemicals that harm coral reefs. A mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreen keeps both you and the ocean protected.
Recommended: Waxhead sunscreen zinc+ – Non-toxic and highly effective.
Choosing the best surf gear makes all the difference in how much fun you have in the water. Whether you're just starting out or leveling up your skills, investing in the right equipment will help you progress faster and stay comfortable.
Surf smart, protect yourself from the sun, and most importantly—have fun out there! See you in the lineup! 🤙
